To get the greatest enjoyment from your traveling in Africa and Latin America there are some general recommendations that apply wherever you go. Some destinations may have more specific issues that are covered at the links below.

Keep in mind that you may be traveling in tropical rainforest environments, mountainous cloud forest environments, hot dry desert, savannah, or coastal environments. Weather can be both hot and cool during your trip.

So that you can be prepared if the area is experiencing unseasonable weather at the time of your departure, we recommend checking the current weather information on the Weather Channel or at www.weather.com.

CLOTHING

The amount of weight you are allowed to carry on small charter flights and even some commercial flights may be limited to only 25 pounds. Even if your trip does not require such a limit you will enjoy your travels more if you can travel lightly. Most people bring too much. It is usually possible to have laundry done for you at reasonable cost along the way, or you can wash out a few items in the sink at night.

Quick-drying clothing made of synthetic fabrics is recommended, especially in the more humid areas where you may become wet from rain showers or perspiration. Please bring neutral and dark colors, as bright colors may frighten wildlife. 100% nylon or rayon dry quickly and are recommended. Cotton does not dry out easily in the tropics and can be very uncomfortable. We highly recommend nylon long pants that you can convert into shorts by zipping off the lower part of the legs. These are perfect for cool mornings that turn into hot afternoons.

Lightweight, Breathable, Waterproof Rain Jacket, especially in the rainy season.

Long Pants and shorts. Lightweight long pants offer the best protection from the sun, insects, or scratches while walking through the bush.
